Description

While Lady and the Tramp is noteworthy for being the very first animated film to be made in the very wide CinemaScope format, a format which retrospectively seems associated with grandiosity and spectacle, it is actually one of the most down-to-earth of the single-narrative features that Walt oversaw. Next in line: The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, and 101 Dalmatians, three other casualties of Disney's failed Limited Issue fall. While Disney's press materials haven't made as big a deal of this as they did for Cinderella or Bambi, the results are every bit as pleasing, if not more so. When Jock and Trusty deduce this is because Darling is pregnant, Tramp inserts himself into the conversation as the "voice of experience", and warns Lady that "when a baby moves in, a dog moves out". It also made it difficult for a single character to dominate the screen so that groups had to be spread out to keep the screen from appearing sparse.

Meanwhile, across town, a stray terrier-mix named Tramp feeds on scraps and handouts, and frees his friends Peg the Pekingese and Bull the Bulldog from the local dogcatcher. The sentimentality is mighty, and the CinemaScope size does not make for any less aware of the thickness of the goo. Close examination reveals a slight gain (about 5%) in picture at the top and bottom of the frame and a severe loss (ranging from about 40-45%, more on that in the next paragraph) in picture in the horizontal aspect.

Produced 46 years after its predecessor and set two years and a few months after the events of the first film, it centers on the adventures of Lady and Tramp's only son, Scamp, who desires to be a wild dog. Passions special, as one of only two animated films to appear on the list, along with Disney's Beauty and the Beast which ranked 34th. One assumes that the mix employed for this has not been manipulated in ways that "Disney Enhanced Home Theater" entails, but I had trouble discerning much difference. Meanwhile, a Schnauzer- mix named Tramp spends his days wandering the streets, stealing food and causing trouble for local dogcatcher Elliot, who has labeled Tramp "vicious" and become obsessed with catching him.

At least, this set's need for elaboration has offered a change of pace from the typical DVD review's audio/video spiel. Tony's Town Square Restaurant is an Italian restaurant inspired by Lady and the Tramp and is located at Walt Disney World, whilst the Pizzeria Bella Notte restaurant is at Disneyland Paris. In July 2018, it was announced that Ashley Jensen, Justin Theroux, and Sam Elliott had been cast in the voice roles of Jock, Tramp, and Trusty, respectively.Additionally, it was reported that Kiersey Clemons was in talks for the live-action role of Darling, Lady's human owner. As he did not belong to a single-family, Tramp implied that it was easier than the baby problems Lady was going through at the time. Lady and the Tramp was first released on North American VHS cassette and Laserdisc in 1987 as part of the Walt Disney Classics video series and in the United Kingdom in 1990.

Although Lady lacks the epic feel and elements of Disney's beloved fairy tales, it holds in this place a charming spirit and a compelling story which entertains more readily than many of the aforementioned class. Still, this is a fact that is barely worth mentioning or noting, let alone spending five sentences on. Whereas fairy tales often strive to achieve a timelessness, Lady recreates the simpler times of the early 20th century and coupled with the mid-'50s sensibilities which distinctly show through the production, it still ends up aging extremely well.To further confuse matters, as they have since 2002, Disney has been promoting this Platinum Edition DVD as something other than a Platinum. However, she sends a box of dog biscuits for Christmas in the final scene of the film in a presumed attempt to make amends for her mistreatment of the two dogs. Meanwhile, a Schnauzer-mutt named “Tramp” spends his days scouring the streets of New Orleans for food while causing trouble for Elliot, the local dog catcher.
